RAPLOCH ONLINE FOR EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
PEOPLE in Raploch are getting all keyed up to make the most of the technology which may be available not just on their doorstep but within their new homes. For many years, Raploch has been seen as one of the most deprived areas in Scotland, often overshadowing individual achievements and its significant community spirit. However, the multi-million pound regeneration process underway for the area has provided a new focus - including the opportunity to show locals leading the way when it comes to new technology.

Part of the regeneration will see 850 new houses built, with the long-term hope that each wifl be fulfy equipped with fibre optic cabling and broadband access-Equal, a European Social Fund Initiative which tests and promotes means of combating discrimination and inequalities in the workplace, held a community event on Friday to celebrate the Raploch regeneration and launch the Building Smarter Communities project. The project, part of a bid to increase education and employment levels, showcased technology and how jt can innovate local business, teach the community new skills, and give Raploch the opportunity to connect to broadband and internet services.

Part of Equal's initiative includes MOLI - Mobile Online Learning Initiative - a broadband satellite-enabled coach that acts as a self-contained mobile classroom. It can be taken anywhere in Scotland to deliver onsite training. Friday's event was attended by locals, politicians and representatives of several agencies involved in the regeneration. It showcased the new Mini MOLI, a smaller van equipped with laptops, wireless connections and satellite broadband connections for the people of Raploch to access technology. Everything from computer games and a mini recording studio for the children, to how to build your own website and even eCommerce can be demonstrated for the people of Raploch through Mini MOLI.

Equal's Building Smarter Communities project manager Leigh Berridge said: "The project means we can help train and retrain people so that when the infrastructure is in place they can take full advantage of it. "The timing of the whole project is also really good and everyone is aware of what's going on in Raploch and working in partnership to ensure locals make the most of the opportunities of the regeneration." Stirling MP Anne McGuire, who attended the event, said; "This initiative is yet another milestone in Raploch s regeneration, 'The community are preparing themselves to make the most of what the 21st century has to offer and certainly from what I saw on Friday this will give that aim a real boost" Information supplied by Firefly Communications
