South Lanarkshire Roots (Genealogy) Project

The principal aim is to promote employment, training and commercial development in the heritage sector, primarily within rural areas of South Lanrkshire.

Initially, information booths are planned at five locations:

  • New Lanark World Heritage Village
  • Museum of Scottish Country Life at Kittochside
  • David Livingstone Centre in Blantyre
  • Low Parks Museum in Hamilton
  • Biggar Museum

The project is targeted at:

  • Satisfying an identified requirement to provide help with initial family history research for visitors from both the UK and oversees to heritage sites in South Lanarkshire.

Ten people will be selected; trained in basic Genealogy research techniques, ICT skills and the use of family history resources on the Internet.

They will be given initial placements to allow development of their new skills.

  • Supporting a new employment approach for 45+ in rural areas of South Lanarkshire
  • The project will be supported by the development of a web based genealogy research site, hosted by South Lanarkshire Council.

This will not only enhance the service already available in the Library service, but by providing for world wide access will also encourage people to visit the locations of their "roots"
